Description:
Euphyllia corals are some of the most popular large polyp stony (LPS) corals in the reef hobby. Common species include Torch Coral (Euphyllia glabrescens), Hammer Coral (Euphyllia ancora), and Frogspawn Coral (Euphyllia divisa). These corals are known for their long, flowing polyps and vibrant colors, ranging from green and gold to pink and purple, often with glowing tips under actinic lighting. Their movement in the water adds a dynamic and beautiful touch to any reef tank.

  • Lighting: Moderate (PAR 75–150)

    • Thrives in moderate lighting, but too much intensity can cause bleaching. Place in a mid-level position or adjust lighting accordingly.

  • Flow: Moderate

    • Gentle to moderate flow is best to allow their polyps to sway gracefully without being damaged.

  • Placement: Rockwork or Substrate

    • Place them in areas where their long tentacles have room to extend. Keep away from aggressive corals or those with strong sweeper tentacles.

  • Temperature: 24–26°C (75–79°F)

  • pH: 8.1–8.4

  • Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH

  • Calcium: 400–450 ppm

  • Magnesium: 1250–1350 ppm

  • Salinity: 1.025–1.026 SG

 

Care Tips:

  • Euphyllia corals are photosynthetic but benefit from occasional feedings of meaty foods like mysis shrimp or brine shrimp to promote growth and maintain vibrant colors.
  • They are semi-aggressive corals and have sweeper tentacles that can sting neighboring corals, so provide sufficient space around them.
  • Stability in water parameters is crucial; avoid rapid fluctuations to prevent tissue recession or polyp retraction.
