Trachyphyllia geoffroyi, commonly known as the Open Brain Coral, is a stunning and hardy large polyp stony (LPS) coral. It features vibrant colors such as green, red, or metallic shades, often with contrasting patterns. This coral is popular for its fleshy, inflated appearance and its ability to thrive in a range of aquarium conditions. It is typically found on sandy substrates or rubble zones in reef environments.

Recommended Parameters:

  • Lighting: Moderate (PAR 50–150)

    • Prefers indirect or diffused lighting. Avoid strong direct light as it can cause stress or bleaching.
  • Flow: Low to Moderate

    • Gentle water movement is ideal to prevent tissue damage.
  • Placement: Sandbed or Flat Surface

    • Place on the substrate away from sharp rocks or aggressive neighbors to avoid injury.
  • Temperature: 24–26°C (75–79°F)

  • pH: 8.1–8.4

  • Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH

  • Calcium: 400–450 ppm

  • Magnesium: 1250–1350 ppm

  • Salinity: 1.025–1.026 SG

Care Tips:

  • Feed regularly with small meaty foods like mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, or reef-specific foods to enhance growth and coloration.
  • Ensure adequate space between it and other corals as its sweeper tentacles can sting neighbors.
  • Maintain stable water parameters and avoid drastic changes to prevent stress.

This coral is an excellent choice for beginner to intermediate hobbyists, adding both beauty and resilience to a reef tank.
